What are NbS?
Our natural environment is in poor health. There are smaller and smaller fragments of native ecosystems left, more of our freshwater system is polluted, and continuing biodiversity loss. These issues are compounded by the impacts of climate change, reducing the resilience of our economic and social systems and affecting land use options.
Addressing these issues needs a multi-pronged approach, and our nature-based solutions (NbS) practitioner at TCG can help you explore how NbS can be used to remedy these challenges.
Using a NbS?
Although our national adaptation plan calls for the use and upscaling of NbS as an option for communities to adapt to climate change, they are not yet considered a serious alternative to grey infrastructure or hybrid approaches.
At TCG, our in-house NbS specialist Dr Belinda McFadgen has been working to promote the value of NbS as a climate adaptation response. She has been briefing councils on the concept; upskilling young practitioners as part of university course presentations; and applying the methodology into flood risk reduction and hapū abundance projects. She is working to understand how to best measure and maximise the co-benefits of NbS for our cultural, social and economic wellbeing, whilst ensuring biodiversity benefits.
